Welcome to the SICS

From March 2015 till today up to 2500 patients consented to join our cohort and to help us improve diagnostics for critically ill patients and gain insight in healthy recovery.

With our team of researchers we aim to understand the concepts and mechanisms which underlie the complexities of organ failure in critically ill patients. We use clinical examination and critical care ultrasonography (CCUS) to explore and investigate the scientific hypotheses. Our goal is to answer knowledge gaps on clinical examination and CCUS to guide health care professionals in daily care.

SICS-I

The Simple Intensive Care Studies-I

The SICS-I ran from March 2015 until July 2017 and 1075 patients were included. Structured physical examination and CCUS of the heart and lungs were used to determine the clinical applicability of cardiac index measurements and to predict mortality. The protocol was published on clinicaltrials.gov and a design paper was published in the BMJ Open (links available on this website).

Currently, analysis of the data is ongoing and multiple manuscripts of our results will be published over the coming years.

SICS-II

The Simple Intensive Care Studies-II

The SICS-II started in May 2018 and ran until July 2019. In total, 1010 patients were included with clinical examination. The primary focus of SICS-II was on hemodynamic function and the development of organ failure. Multiple substudies have been predefined. The protocol was published on clinicaltrials.gov and in the Journal of Visualized Experiments. You can find the link and many other interesting content on the other pages on our website.
